Speakers, Headphones as Sound Devices

Sound devices are output devices which emit sounds in the form of music, lectures, voice calls. It can be initiated from a computer to humans and it is expressed through output devices by exciting the sense organ (ear).

Examples of common sound devices in use include:

  • Speakers
  • Headphones
  • Subwoofer

SPEAKERS

Speakers are one of the most common output devices used in history. Its use dates back to the earliest records of the invention of electronics.

Speakers are designed to produce audio output that can be heard by the listener and they do this by converting electromagnetic waves into sound waves. The waves are received from various audio inputs.

A speaker’s ability to correctly reproduce its sound input determines how clear the audio output will be. Recent speakers have begun to introduce multiple speaker cones to produce more accurate sounds for each of those frequency ranges. For example, a 2-way speaker is likely to have a tweeter and a mid-range speaker while a 3-way speaker will have a tweeter, mid-range speaker and a subwoofer.

If you have used speakers before, you would have noticed that they come in pairs which enable them to produce stereo sound. Stereo sounds are able to use the left and right speakers transmit audio on two completely separate channels. By using two speakers, music sounds much more natural since our ears are used to hearing sounds from the left and right at the same time. Surround systems may include four to seven speakers (plus a subwoofer), which creates an even more realistic experience.

HEADPHONE

Headphones are a pair of small loudspeaker drivers that are designed to be worn on or around the head over a user’s ears. They are very similar to speakers but on different because they are designed to be worn by one person on both ears so that they can listen to the audio sound alone. It is a private way of listening to music and other kinds of audio. Headphones are also known as ear speakers’ supra-aural headphones use a band over the top of the head to hold the speakers in place. Headphones are able to connect to a signal source such as an audio amplifier radio, CD player, portable media player, mobile phone, video game console, or electronic musical instrument, either directly using a cord, or using wireless technology such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or fm radio.

The first headphones were developed in the late 1800s for use by telephone operators, to keep their hands free, which is another name they are known by when used in receiving phone calls.

Subwoofer

Subwoofer is a woofer, or a complete loudspeaker used to produce of low pitched audio frequencies known as bass. While the term “subwoofer” technically only refers to the speaker driver, in common parlance, the term often refers to a subwoofer driver mounted in a speaker enclosure (cabinet).

Subwoofers are made up of one or more woofers mounted in a loudspeaker enclosure often made of wood capable of withstanding air pressure while resisting deformation.

They can either be active or passive.

Passive subwoofers have a subwoofer driver and enclosure and they are powered by an external amplifier. Active subwoofers include a built-in amplifier.

USES AND FORMS OF SOUND DEVICES:

The sounds we hear can be very useful in a number of ways and are important because sound convey emotions or excite our emotions in both negative and positive ways.

Some of the most common ways of using sound devices is in:

  • Entertainment and Music
  • Education
  • Computing
  • Social networking
  • Games
  • Politics
  • Social awareness
